Why Mature Golfers Should Consider CBD to Enhance Their Game

Golf offers the ideal combination of camaraderie and competition for us active boomers, but it’s a game that gets more challenging the older we get. Our drives don’t go as far, fewer putts go in, fatigue is often a close companion (especially on the back nine!) and those nagging sore muscles and joint pains take a toll on our flexibility. That mythical achievement of being able to shoot your age? That’s accomplished by only 9 in a million amateur golfers according to Quora.

CBD is now allowed ( but not officially endorsed) on both the PGA and Champion Golf Tours and is endorsed by a number of golf professionals from Bubba Watson, Billy Horschel and Scott McCarron and also Nick Faldo who’s said: “CBD is a part of my day-to-day regime and been essential to staying in peak performance both physically and mentally.” CBD is also used by a number of local teaching pros such as myself and forty million Americans though there remains a lot of confusion especially with regards to its more notorious cousin marijuana.

Both marijuana and hemp-extract CBD products come from varieties of the cannabis plant, however marijuana is psychoactive, (i.e. gets you high), and in some cases, can be addictive. Hemp-derived CBD however is neither psychoactive nor addictive, is legal federally and has been declared safe for the public by no less an authority than the World Health Organization. The FDA still limits what specific health benefits CBD companies can claim especially for ingestible gummies and softgels and where it can be advertised.

I have identified three specific areas where CBD can have the biggest impact on the scores of all golfers, especially those of us sixty and over:

  1. mental balance

  2. sore muscle and joint pain

  3. insomnia.

Virtually everybody has to deal with some level of anxiety and stress these days, which can distract you from playing your best golf. A lack of focus can affect your set-up, mess with your swing rhythm as well as sinking your fair share of those dastardly 3–5 foot putts that the younger golfers seem to be able to make in their sleep. Whatever your issue, a 25mg CBD gummy or tincture can calm you and help you stay focused and centered. Hemp works naturally with the body’s endocannabinoid system to help you achieve an internal state of balance called “homeostasis.” Think of CBD as your body’s own internal emotional thermostat to help keep you on an even keel.

Perhaps the most prevalent benefit of CBD for older golfer is near immediate relief for sore muscle aches, joints pains and even arthritis. If this is something that impacts your game, you may be interested in a hemp-based topical relief rub that you apply locally and provides relief for hours at a time. This is where hemp CBD’s anti-inflammatory benefits can have the biggest impact. It’s worth noting that The Arthritis Foundation recently did a survey of 2,600 of its members (http://blog.arthritis.org/news/patients-tell-us-cbd-use/) and discovered 29% are already using CBD for the relief of pain and another 33% are planning to, over the next 12 months. I use a potent local 1000mg pain relief cream before and after a game, and also carry a non-greasy 500mg roll-on in my bag to deal with any mid-round flare-ups.

Finally, you can’t play your best golf if you are not getting a good night’s sleep. There are a number of great CBD products with small amounts of melatonin that provide a dual-benefit to calm everyday anxieties that can make it difficult to fall asleep and also naturally enhances your sleep cycle.

We mature golfers need to use every tool possible to score our best and that includes a variety of holistic approaches such as yoga for enhanced flexibility, regular workouts in the gym for optimal fitness to prevent back nine fatigue, reduced use of sugar and alcohol to help us stay present in the moment, and natural, anti-inflammatory, hemp-based CBD to address pain and arthritis as well as anxiousness and bouts of sleeplessness.
